Lice can affect beyond the scalp and homemade solutions help in the treatment

Among the various concerns for children, the lice are one of them. However, although it is a common factor among the little ones, the condition can also affect adults and even concentrate beyond the scalp.

Clessya Rocha, dermatologist and professor of dermatology at the State University of Southwest Bahia (UESB), explains that the infestation is “a skin disease caused by Phthiraptera parasites, which live their entire existence in the host: the human being”.

The main consequence of this condition is pruritus (itching), the result of “hypersensitivity to the mite’s saliva, introduced during its blood supply”, which can reflect on the well-being of those who suffer from it. In addition, the specialist highlights that self-esteem is also affected, since, in more severe cases, insects are visible in the wires. Despite these factors, Clessya reports “there are no reports in the literature of serious health risks from pediculosis (lice infestation)”.

Head lice on other parts of the body

Because it is more exposed, the scalp is the area most affected by lice. However, insects can also concentrate on the hairs of the intimate regions, through direct contact during sexual intercourse with someone infected. “They can also lodge in the hair on the chest, armpits, beard and even eyelashes”, says scientist Jackeline Alecrim.

Although they need a human host, insects can also lodge in objects such as pillows, blankets, sofas, caps, caps, hairbrushes, towels, among others that have had contact with someone in this condition.

How to prevent and treat head lice

Clessya highlights poor hygiene of the scalp and other areas as one of the main factors that keep insects. “They have a life cycle of 30 to 40 days. Females produce about 300 eggs (nits), which adhere to the hair and hatch after eight days, thus becoming adult parasites that will survive by sucking blood from their host” , explains.

Lice do not fly, as many believe, and are spread by contact. Therefore, avoiding sharing the objects listed above without proper hygiene in water with a temperature above 60º is essential. The specialist also recommends keeping the hair tied and washing it daily.

For those who have pediculosis, it is worth consulting a dermatologist for the proper indication of treatment, which can be done with special shampoos, use of fine combs or even oral administration remedies.

Some home measures, when performed with caution, can also help in the treatment; Clessya recipe two options:

Blending essential oils on the scalp

  • 50 ml of coconut oil;
  • 2 to 3 drops of tea tree essential oil;
  • 2 to 3 drops of fennel essential oil;
  • 50 ml of apple cider vinegar.

Usage mode: Mix all the ingredients and apply directly on the scalp, letting it act for 30 minutes. After the period, wash your hair normally with regular shampoo.

Apple Cider Vinegar Wash

  • 1 glass of cider or apple cider vinegar;
  • 1 cup of warm water.

Usage mode: Wet the scalp with the mixture of ingredients and let the solution act for 30 minutes, wearing a shower cap. After the period, wash your hair normally with usual shampoo and use a fine-toothed comb to remove the nits, which will be more malleable due to the solution.

In case of irritation or any other adverse symptom, it is essential to stop using these homemade measures and consult a doctor.
